Grandfather clocks have long been a statement of style and incomparable accuracy, thanks to their swinging pendulums. Since the weights and the pendulum were both long and heavy, they needed to be housed in a tall case, which is how the grandfather clock came about. These elegant timepieces date back to the mid-15th century, and were a sign of affluence in England and, later, the United States. Not only were they the best way to tell time, since they didn’t lose hours like other clocks of that period, they were also beautiful pieces of furniture, most standing between 7 and 9 feet tall.
