Grandfather clocks have long been a statement of style and incomparable accuracy, thanks to their swinging pendulums. Since the weights and the pendulum were both long and heavy, they needed to be housed in a tall case, which is how the grandfather clock came about. These elegant timepieces date back to the mid-15th century, and were a sign of affluence in England and, later, the United States.
