As a general rule of thumb, an area rug should adequately cover your entire seating area. If you’re purchasing a rug for your living room, for example, all the legs of your furniture — couch, accent chairs and tables — should be entirely on the rug. Another option is making sure that at least the front legs of all your furniture in a conversational grouping rest on the rug. Color is another important thing to consider when shopping for an area rug. If your room has lots of color in the couches, on the walls and in the accent pieces, opt for a neutral-colored rug.
