HOM Furniture Location Sees Over $50,000 in Energy Savings Using 75F Controls
75F Inc., a billionaire-backed startup that uses smart sensors and controls to make commercial buildings more efficient and more comfortable, today announced substantial energy savings and an Energy Star Rating increase for the Plymouth, MN HOM Furniture location.
Since installing the 75F system in their retail store, HOM Furniture has saved more than $50,000 from October 2018 through October 2019, using EnergyPrint’s Utility Dashboard to track their consumption and verify their savings. These savings are equivalent to a 21.1% decrease in energy costs and a 21.4% decrease in energy consumption for the building, respectively, far exceeding projected pre-installation calculations. Furthermore, the collaboration with 75F and EnergyPrint led to a substantial increase in the building’s Energy Star Rating, from 55 to 76.
"One reason HOM wanted to implement this was to cut back on our carbon footprint”, said John Pierce, Real Estate Director for HOM Furniture. “We want to be good stewards to both the local and global environments and implementing 75F has definitely aided us in this initiative. We are happy with our operating efficiency and lower energy consumption and look forward to seeing what 75F can do in our other facilities.”
Since 2010, HOM Furniture, one of the largest furniture retailers servicing customers in the upper Midwest, has been tracking utility and energy performance data for their retail stores with EnergyPrint. With energy consumption a top operating expense for the company, spending nearly $230,000 annually on energy costs, HOM started proactively searching for cost-effective solutions to increase building efficiency.
In the fall of 2018, HOM Furniture saw an opportunity with 75F to optimize their existing ten-year-old equipment with new Outside Air Optimization Economizer controls, starting installation at their Plymouth location. Smart sensor upgrades were also added for each unit to allow for remote monitoring and control.
“Most people aren’t aware that commercial buildings are responsible for 39% of global carbon emissions, the majority coming from HVAC and lighting. At 75F, we use easy-to-install, machine-learning powered control systems to make buildings more efficient while increasing occupancy comfort and productivity,” said Deepinder Singh, CEO and founder of 75F. “The energy savings that HOM Furniture has seen coupled with the increased Energy Star Rating is incredibly impressive and we look forward to implementing our system into their entire portfolio.”
The partnership between 75F and EnergyPrint allows HOM Furniture to implement an affordable building automation system that not only improves building efficiency, but also proves the direct financial impact these solutions made to their bottom line. Additionally, EnergyPrint’s Utility Dashboard provides the HOM Furniture team the ability to track their entire portfolio so they can easily identify other properties where 75F solutions might be beneficial.
“It’s fulfilling to see an energy success story through from start to finish,” said Matt Arneson, President at EnergyPrint. “HOM Furniture’s outcome at their Plymouth location is exactly what we strive for – deriving insights from the data inherent in utility bills and using those insights to recommend solutions that lead to significant, measurable outcomes. We’re excited to continue working with 75F and HOM Furniture for more success stories just like this one.”
HOM Furniture is currently moving forward with installing 75F systems in their entire site portfolio of 18 locations.
HOM Furniture to create flagship location in Bloomington, MN to include Gabberts and DOCK86 Brands
HOM Furniture will construct a new state of the art flagship location in Bloomington, Minnesota replacing the existing HOM Furniture. Construction will begin May 1st when the current HOM location will be torn down to make way for a new HOM Furniture, Gabberts Fine Furniture and Design Studio, and DOCK86 Furniture. The site will more than double the size of the current location to over 206,000 square feet making it the largest HOM complex. "This project has been a long time in the making. We had to acquire the space that housed both Golf Galaxy and Budget Truck Center to create the needed footprint for the project," said HOM Furniture CEO, Rod Johansen. “The Bloomington store along I-494 was the 1st location we opened when we entered the market as the waterbed specialty chain Waterbed Room in 1980,” added Johansen.
In 1991, the site was expanded to include HOM Oak and Leather and in 1997 HOM Furniture took over the site as it is today. Gabberts will be moving out of its current Galleria location in 2020 when the project is scheduled for completion. Gabberts has been located in the Galleria since 1959 when Don Gabbert built the location of the current store and later also built the Galleria Mall. HOM acquired Gabberts Furniture in 2008.
“We are excited about bringing Gabberts to our new Bloomington flagship showroom, where we will be able to showcase the iconic Gabberts brand with an updated showroom and design studio” stated Johansen. The Gabberts showroom will be larger overall with some expanded product categories in most departments including mattresses, rugs, carpet and flooring as well as patio. The new Gabberts will be featuring the latest trends and stunning visual displays. The showroom will also have the favorite brands Gabberts is known for, including a newly designed Stickley gallery.
DOCK86, which is the “off priced” brand HOM introduced in 2011, will add its third metro location. HOM and Gabberts will both be 2 levels and DOCK86 will be on a single level.
With 206,000 square feet the site will be one of the largest selections of furnishings in the USA. The showroom will feature over 500 seating options with most in stock for immediate delivery along with thousands of custom order options available from both HOM and Gabberts.
The new showroom will feature an expanded Flooring and Rug department, with thousands of rugs and flooring options on display. HOM Sleep Express will have over 75 mattresses on display. Additional departments will include Seasonal Concepts Patio, Uptown Urban Furnishings, and an Amish Craftsmen Gallery.
Johansen continued "One of the questions asked from many of our business partners related to the magnitude of this project is how we can compete with online e-tailers. Even with all of the product options on the internet, we feel that no one rivals our ability to deliver more choices quicker or with more professional services than we can. With our purchasing power as a top 50 USA retailer and because we develop and manufacture our own private label brands exclusively, allows us the ability to better price our products versus on-line companies. We have all of the services including Free Shipping making us one of the strongest options for furniture. Internet furniture e-tailers have not mastered the "last mile" delivery quality we can deliver to our customers and we feel that we will continue to be where internet pure plays will always struggle using 3rd party logistics that aren't trained in furniture moving. It is well documented that e-tailers experience rates of returns in the 20-30% range whereas we experience about 3% making the overall experience significantly higher when using local furniture companies. Plus, you can sit on or touch before you buy, which most of our business partners, who are also customers acknowledge the importance to them to be able to do so. If you don’t feel the need to see, and touch the products before you buy, our online websites offer full e-commerce purchasing, but with the added value of getting the same selection and delivery services we offer in the store".
The exterior and interior design of the facility was developed by RSP Architects, Minneapolis and Archnet of Stillwater, MN. General contractor of the project is Benson Orth Associates, Golden Valley, MN.
In other news, HOM announced their 17th location will open in the second quarter of 2019 in Wausau, Wisconsin and recently opened their 16th location in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota.
HOM Helps Raise Awareness for Ovarian Cancer
HOM Furniture had the honor to help sponsor the Minnesota Ovarian Cancer Alliance’s (MOCA) 19th annual HOM Teal Strides for Ovarian Cancer walk and run on September 15, 2018, at Rosland Park in Edina, MN; an event which raised over $320,000 for the organization. A statewide nonprofit, MOCA is dedicated to providing support to women with ovarian cancer through raising awareness and advancing medical research.
With close to 3,000 participants in this year’s event, employees, families, and friends of HOM Furniture walked side-by-side with survivors and others impacted by ovarian cancer, and many members of our community. HOM Furniture Aims to Become Minnesota's Largest Flooring Retailer
COON RAPIDS, Minn. — To some furniture retailers, rugs might seem like an afterthought category, an obligatory offering simply to round out their home furnishings selections. But for HOM Furniture, rugs are a vibrant and important part of the company’s product mix, and integral to its goal of becoming Minnesota’s largest flooring retailer - in both soft and hard surfaces.
“We believe rugs add to the total assortment of product for a furniture retailer,” says Kyle Johansen, executive director of merchandising for HOM Furniture. Johansen estimates that area rugs comprise about three percent of the company’s sales. “Rugs are the jewelry of the room. Everyone has a brown leather sofa or a grey fabric sofa these days, and those are pretty boring without a great rug.”
