Many of us find ourselves living in smaller spaces, whether we’re urban apartment dwellers, downsizing empty nesters or somewhere in between. While the small space lifestyle tends to be one filled with less cleaning and more living, there are still issues when it comes to making the most of our space.
With some clever strategies, small space bedrooms can provide the relaxation and peacefulness that you need after a long day—without making you feel cramped or trapped. Here are some of our favorite small bedroom ideas to help you sleep easy no matter the size of your room.
One of the most common small bedroom ideas is an easy one: keep it simple. The less busy the layout of the room is, the bigger the room will look. Focus on the flow of the room, especially around the bed, to maximize your space. First, choose a bed size that will best fit your space and your sleep needs. For most adult small bedroom inhabitants, a queen bed is the right fit.

Another great way to maximize your space is to turn to creative storage solutions, like a storage bed frame. Beds with built-in under the bed storage give you even more closet space without bulking up the layout (and “closet space” feels like a magic word in small bedrooms). You can switch out a big dresser or armoire with a bedframe with storage for a simple small space solution.
Whether you choose a storage bed or another bedframe, the bed tends to be the focal point of your room. One fabulous design trend we’re seeing in small spaces is the use of a statement bed. Designers tend to pair beautiful, but not bulky, bed frames with a lot of plush looking linens. Choose comforters, throw blankets and throw pillows in different textures to bring visual interest to your small space.
For other storage solutions, use the vertical space that often gets forgotten. Go tall, not squat, with dressers, chests and shelves. Many with small bedrooms are turning to wall mounted nightstands and wall mounted lighting. This allows for you to save precious space in your small bedroom layout while not sacrificing your storage. In fact, many are turning to other creative solutions for space-saving nightstands. C-shaped stands are especially popular solutions to the nightstand, as they can fit around the edge of the bed or other furniture in a pinch.
Like in all rooms of the house, multifunctional furniture can be a life-saver in the bedroom. Many bedroom pieces, like the bed frame, feature hidden or extra storage. Ottomans, benches and other chair solutions with hidden storage make for end-of-the-bed seating that works double time. Mirrors, which are often every designer’s favorite small space solution for the way they bounce visual light and space around a room, can often come with storage as well, making them the perfect multifunctional multitasker.
Another bedroom solution that’s small in space but not in style are curtains and other window treatments. By expanding the design space up around the windows, window treatments can create the illusion of space visually without taking away from the flow of your room. Light colored or white curtains, especially those that are gauzy or thinner, can instantly turn a smaller bedroom into an airy oasis.
