Start by doing your research, including busting mattress myths that are obsolete, and you’ll be on your way to finding the perfect mattress for you. Read through our list of busted myths and get on your way to a better night’s sleep!
Myth: A mattress is good until it visibly sags.
Fact: While sagging is an obvious sign that it’s time to start shopping, there are less evident indicators of old age. Unexplained back aches and restless sleep may mean your mattress is past its prime.
Myth: You must replace your mattress every eight years.
Fact: The lifespan of your mattress depends on a couple of factors. First, the quality of the mattress itself. Some low-end mattresses may lose support in just a few years, while some high-quality, luxury mattresses may hold up much longer. Mattress life is also affected by how it’s used. If you purchase a high-quality mattress for the occasional guest, it will obviously last longer than a mattress subjected to toddlers’ high-jump training sessions.
Myth: If you have a bad back, you must buy an extra-firm mattress.
Fact: A common belief is those who suffer from chronic back pain should purchase an extra-firm mattress for the best support. The reality is, the right fit depends on many factors—even for those who suffer from back aches. Considerations include sleep position as well as the sleeper’s size and, most importantly, individual preferences.
Myth: You must flip your mattress every few months.
Fact: Your Grandma’s incessant advice to regularly flip your mattress to prolong its life is based on obsolete technology. Most modern mattresses are built to be one-sided and should not be flipped.
Myth: One size fits all.
Fact: Comfort is subjective and the “best” mattress boils down to individual preference. Testing multiple mattresses for comfort and support allows you to make a decision that will lead to the most restful nights—no counting sheep required.
