Budget Bedroom Buys

Give your bedroom a luxurious upgrade for less with these affordable looks.

Is your master bedroom boring? That may be OK when it’s time to sleep, but most of today’s bedrooms are expected to be more versatile. They’re a place to read or watch TV. Some have a niche set aside as an office or some table space for a craft or hobby.

Maybe you’d like a remodeled bedroom but don’t have the budget for a major overhaul. If so, help is on the way! Here are six bedroom decor ideas to revitalize your special space without knocking the stuffing out of your wallet.

1. Showcase the Bed

The bed is the focal point of the room, and if it’s lost its luster, it’s time to give it a makeover! Let’s start with the headboard. You can bring life to almost any bed by adding an upholstered headboard. They fit with any design style because they’re classic and current at the same time. Neutral colors are grandly suited to some rooms, but there are also bold colors and patterns that give you a headboard with an exclamation point! On top of everything else, an upholstered headboard is a comfy place to rest your noggin while you’re enjoying your favorite movie.

Next, add some bedding to go with that new headboard. If the headboard is a solid color, here’s a chance to introduce some pattern with a duvet. You might choose a fuzzy or fringed bed covering for that touch of interest that texture brings.

Top off the treatment with new throw pillows. Show off your personality with bright colors and themed patterns. You can even pick up a few extra to change up the look from time to time throughout the year.

New bedding, lamps and other decor can upgrade your bed and the overall look of your bedroom.

2. Rejuvenate the Furniture Arrangement

It’s amazing how the personality of the room changes when you move the bed. Turn it 90 degrees, put it in a corner or even shift it into the center of the room. The dressers and chests may tell you where they should go to complement.

Cast a critical eye at your current furnishings and see if there’s anything you don’t use, something that might do better elsewhere. This “addition by subtraction” may free up space for a totally new and different item.

If there’s now room for more, a storage bench or storage ottoman is both attractive and practical. It will stash away linen and other belongings, and it’s a spot to sit and tie your shoes. It’s an outstanding place to sit, period. It’s satisfying to survey the room from an entirely new perch.

Maybe here’s a location just crying out for an accent chair. You might introduce an entirely new color or style, and the chair could become your favorite place to relax with a drink and a book before bedtime.

One of the easiest and most effective upgrades: choose stylish new knobs and pulls for your chests and dressers. It takes a few dollars and a few minutes to make the change, and you may wonder why you didn’t do it before.

3. Delight in New Lighting

Want more compelling direct lighting? Replace that overhead bulb and bowl with a chandelier. Prefer softer light? Then add indirect lighting such as table lamps, sconces and recessed lights. Want a different look that few bedrooms have? Hang pendants over your nightstands.

4. Rethink the Walls

You’re always looking at the same four walls, and if you don’t change them, they won’t change themselves. It’s astonishing what even a slight difference in paint color can do. You might paint the ceiling while you’re at it. Uncompromising white produces the brightest look, and off-whites and pastels are conducive to atmosphere.

Rearrange your wall art, or take something down if you’ve looked at it too long. Try new pictures and paintings with just a touch of your primary room color. Or ones with a dominant color that matches a room accent. For example, they might play off a throw pillow or a secondary color in an area rug.

New wall art can upgrade your room without opening a paint can.

5. Do More for the Floor

When you land your bare feet on a comfy rug in the morning, it sets the tone for the whole day. Area rugs look fashionable beside the bed, at the foot or even under the lower half of a bed.

Even if you already have carpeting, don’t underestimate what a rug can do. Lay a patterned rug atop a solid carpet or vice versa. Use a textured area rug over low pile carpet. Use a rug under a chair and side table to set off your reading nook.

6. Bring It to Life with Plants

There’s more than one way to add plant life to a bedroom. Greenery is always an invigorating choice. It can rest on dresser tops or hang from the walls. Leafy and blooming plants make exquisite pot fillers. Table pots and floor pots are golden opportunities to echo or contrast to the colors in your master bedroom decor ideas.

Consider displaying a vase or two with an ever-changing rotation of cut flowers. Or arrange tall dried stems or faux florals in a floor basket.

Flowers have their seasons, but any time of year is right for transforming your bedroom. Use a few of these ideas and make some upgrades that are easy on your time and your budget.
