Carpet Comeback
Comfort reigns supreme in 2021, and that means wall-to-wall carpet is back.

If you’re thinking of new flooring, you’ve heard a lot about wood, tile and vinyl. But have you thought about good old-fashioned wall-to-wall carpeting? It’s making a comeback in 2021, and for several good reasons.
No, wood and other hard floors aren’t going away, but more people are realizing there are some things a wood or vinyl floor just can’t do. It can’t provide the luxurious barefoot feel of a fine carpet, and it doesn’t offer the same variety of colors and trendy new patterns.
What Are the Advantages of Carpet?
Take a few minutes to remind yourself of all modern carpet has to offer.
- Comfort. There’s nothing better to set your bare feet on when you roll out of bed on a crisp morning. No other surface is as cozy and plush.
- Noise reduction. It softens footsteps and even diminishes sound from TV and stereos. This, along with comfort, makes it an especially attractive choice in bedrooms.
- Energy efficiency. Carpet not only feels warm in the winter, it also insulates, reducing the cost of heating and cooling a room.
- Safety. Socks and slippers won’t slide on carpet. If kids (or older adults) do take tumbles, the softness of carpet makes for a gentler landing.
- Family friendliness. Carpet is softer for kids to play on and comfortable enough for grown-ups to get on the floor with them. While maintenance might not be as easy as hard floors, many of today’s carpets are stain-resistant and repel moisture. Also, today’s robotic vacuum cleaners can take the burden out of the old vacuuming chore.
- Versatility. Carpets are stylish. There’s no limit to the ways they bring color and pattern to a room. They can complement what’s already there, or you may use them to establish an entire new look.
- Cost. Carpeting can be remarkably affordable, especially when compared to wood. You may be pleasantly surprised at how many carpet choices fit within your budget.
How Do I Choose a Carpet?
It takes some thought. Why? Because there are so many choices! Carpets in 2021 come in an abundance of styles, constructions and materials.
Looped Pile or Cut Pile?
These are the two major categories of carpeting, and each has its advantages.
Looped pile carpeting is composed of small loops of fiber attached to the backing. It’s a durable product, and many looped pile carpets offers stain resistance. Loop pile carpet can have even heights and a smooth low profile ideal for high-traffic areas. It can also have varying heights for a sophisticated, sculpted look.
Looped pile carpets minimize foot tracks and vacuum trails. They are, however, subject to snagging from pet claws and sharp objects.
With cut pile carpeting, the loops have been cut at the tops. This makes them the denser and softer choice. Cut pile carpets resist matting and crushing. They are more subject to staining and difficult to clean than looped pile.
Saxony carpet, with its plush look and feel, is the most classic style of cut pile carpet. As with looped pile, the cut loops can be at even or variable heights for either a smooth or textured look.
Natural or Synthetic Fiber?
Today’s carpet is available in both natural and synthetic materials.
Nylon carpet fiber is durable and often treated for stain resistance. It runs the entire gamut in price and quality. The better nylon carpets have higher weight and density.
Polypropylene such as Olefin is moisture and mold resistant, which makes it great for basements and lower levels. It’s not as soft as other materials.
Natural fibers are big in 2021, prized for their environmental friendliness and their earthy, organic look. Wool is the most popular with its soft and luxurious feel, but there’s also seagrass, jute and sisal. They’re all options for folks who love authentic natural weave.
Stain Resistance
If you’re installing your carpeting in a high-traffic area, it can become worn and dingy over time. A way to fight this? Consider a carpet with a stain repellent such as Stainmaster or Scotchguard. Don’t let soiling or pet accidents spoil your investment.
What Carpet Styles Are Available?
This is where the fun of carpet selection really starts! As carpet has made its comeback, it’s come back with a major splash! Do you want a neutral carpet to complement the room, or would you prefer your carpet to take center stage and make its own bold statement? It’s your choice; both attitudes are available. If you like patterns, you’re in good company. There’s lots of interest in the patterns this season.
On the subdued side, there are tasteful beiges and grays. There are calming earth tones that pay a respectful nod to nature.
But if you want bold and colorful, modern carpet trends have you covered! Expressive patterns, stripes and geometrics decorate carpeting that just won’t let itself be ignored. Deep radiant colors and jewel tones can lead the way in setting a creative style statement. Of course, you’ll also find subtle pattern options that will lend understated style to your room.
And don’t forget about texture. A carpet with uneven heights has perspective and brings a different flavor of artistry to the room.
Many people find that the bolder patterns work well in high traffic areas such as hallways, stairways and landings, and that the calmer tones foster relaxation in bedrooms.
Don’t Forget the Pad!
To get the most out of your carpet, lay it on top of a quality carpet cushion. Not only does padding prolong the life of your purchase, it also makes for more comfortable walking and increases the soundproofing and insulating qualities.
Carpet as a 2021 Option
Hardwood, tile, vinyl and laminate will continue to be excellent floor choices, but carpet deserves a fresh look. It’s an affordable option that has a place not only in low traffic areas such as bedrooms and offices but can also hold its own in busier locations. It’s a great choice to keep in mind as you decide how your floors should look this year and beyond.
